I have been dropshipping on eBay for the last 7 years, and often I have received sales for items that were out of stock. We NEVER cancel the order, especially with the benefits of dropshipping with fast shipping.

Here's what we do:

  • Find an alternative item that is cheaper and list it in your store at a higher price to increase the perceived value. With fast delivery dropshipping suppliers, we can ensure that the alternative product still reaches the customer quickly, maintaining trust in our service.

  • Blame a third party and align with the buyer. In dropshipping with fast shipping, it's crucial to communicate that any delays are beyond your control while still ensuring quick resolutions. Fast shipping reassures the buyer, even if the original item is out of stock.

  • Give the buyer a coupon to use on anything in your store. Offering faster shipping options through your fast delivery dropshipping suppliers sweetens the deal.

  • Address the buyer's problem and sympathize with them. If the customer feels heard, and you can still promise quick delivery thanks to dropshipping with fast shipping, they are more likely to stay loyal to your store.

  • Offer a more expensive item as an apology. When suggesting a replacement, ensure that the item comes from a reliable fast delivery dropshipping supplier. Speeding up the process can turn a potentially negative experience into a positive one.

Example message: I am so sorry, Jim. The iPhone 13 you ordered was damaged by the recent tornado in Texas. I really want to make things right. Can I send you the latest iPhone 14? It’s more expensive, but I want to make it right. Additionally, here is a 10% coupon for anything in our store, and we will expedite the shipping thanks to our partnership with fast delivery dropshipping suppliers. If that doesn’t work for you, please let me know so I can process an instant refund. Thank you again for supporting our small family business. It really means a lot to me that you took the time to shop with us.

Cheers.

am I understanding this correctly?.... you are listing an iphone 13 even though you do not have an iphone13 in stock, but instead listing it at the price of an iphone14. So when they order and get "upgraded" to the 14 you look like a hero and build loyalty, even though the price point fir you remains constant

OP

It sounds like there might be a bit of confusion here, so let me clarify the strategy for you.

The idea isn't about listing an item you don't have in stock, like an iPhone 13, with the intention of not having it at all. Instead, it's about managing situations where an item you sold is unexpectedly out of stock after the sale. In such cases, rather than cancelling the order—which can disappoint customers and affect your seller rating—you look for creative ways to resolve the issue in a way that maintains customer satisfaction and potentially enhances their experience.

Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Alternative Item Strategy: If the original item is out of stock, find a similar item, perhaps at a lower cost to you. You can offer this item instead, sometimes even enhancing its perceived value by increasing its price slightly. This isn’t about deceiving the customer but adjusting the offer to continue making the sale possible.
  2. Upgrading: In the example given, when an iPhone 13 is out of stock, the strategy involves offering an iPhone 14 instead. This isn't about listing nonexistent stock but reacting proactively when an issue arises. This makes the customer feel taken care of, as they're getting a better item for the price of the lesser one.
  3. Perceived Value: By offering a more expensive item (like upgrading from iPhone 13 to iPhone 14), you're not just keeping the sale alive but also enhancing the customer's perception of your customer service. This builds loyalty and can lead to positive reviews, which are crucial on platforms like eBay.
  4. Communication and Offers: Adding a personal apology and a coupon for future purchases acknowledges the inconvenience to the customer and provides them an incentive to return to your store, turning a potentially negative experience into a positive one.

So, in simpler terms: When you sell something that goes out of stock, instead of cancelling the order, find a way to offer something equal or better. This keeps your customers happy, maintains your sales, and builds trust and loyalty, even if there was a hiccup in getting them exactly what they initially wanted.

Yeah we always send links to other similar products with a discount code, but never went as far as increasing the price of the alternative items to compensate for the code lol.

Good process!
