This will be a very long passage. I want to share what I’ve learned from Facebook ads over the past year. For one year, I spent all my free time, every night, just trying to make my Shopify shop succeed. Now that I have, I want to give you my secrets so you can avoid the pain I went through and achieve success faster.

 

Why Shopify Suppliers Are Key to Your Dropshipping Success

Before diving into ad strategies, let’s talk about the importance of working with reliable Shopify suppliers. These suppliers ensure seamless fulfillment, enabling fast delivery dropshipping, which is critical for customer satisfaction. Should I Use Manual or Advantage+?

You should ONLY use Advantage+ during the product TEST phase. From my experience, Manual campaigns work best after testing.

During Advantage+, if you're getting low CPC and high CTR, it means the product is resonating with your target audience on Facebook. Make sure your product gets engagement (Reactions & Shares). At a minimum, aim for Reactions after the test phase.

How Do I Know Which Product Will Succeed?

  2. Small Budget Testing: Test 5 products in the same category with a $10/day total budget ($2 per ad set). While this is a tight budget, it’s the best approach to gather quick insights.
  3. Analyze Metrics: After 2 days, evaluate CTR (must be 4%+), CPC (target $0.50 or less), and engagement levels.

  • Budget Consistency: Never abruptly increase the budget, as this confuses Facebook’s algorithm. Keep it steady and let the algorithm adapt naturally.

With how things stands right now, you can listen to Facebook and then pretty much do the opposite. I’ve seen accounts running 100% cost caps in the upper six figures. The reality is that Facebook doesn’t know how their own product works anymore.

Your goal needs to be getting Facebook as much consolidated data as possible, and experiment with everything until you find what’s working for you.

I'm trying bid caps for the first time ever at the moment. I started the campaign 6 days ago> first I collected our conversion history on an ad level. Then set the cap 5x what our historic CPA is. So far it more or less is performing the same as our other campaigns. I heard that it can be a good idea to slowly lower the bid caps though, over time very gradually. Do you know anything about this? :)

This might be true for you on your account, but won't be true for everyone. I work across several accounts and original audience options works better in a lot of cases, especially in lead gen for local businesses. Why? Because adV+ audience takes your targeting inputs as 'suggestions' and generally expands out past that a lot of the time which can be really problematic for local businesses bc it will target people in other states, etc.

Original audience options takes your targeting inputs more as parameters and will respect what you put. Adv+ audience can work better for accounts with a lot of data but not so much for new accounts. Adv+ audience is using new AI features that are still being trained while the original audience is using the original algorithm which has been around for a really long time in comparison.

What if your historical cost per purchase is greater than $5? You generally want to give each ad set enough spend to get 1 sale per day so that it gets enough conversion data to optimize.

Have you ever considered that Facebook's incentives are not necessarily aligned with yours? Are you someone who always accepted all of Facebooks recommendations? If so, you might be succeeding despite what you are doing. I am glad that these strategies worked for you but be very careful always following what Facebook recommends and test thoroughly because you may be able to improve your performance further.

agreed on the advantage+ vs original audiences. i run marketing for a nightclub and whenever i turn advantage+ audiences on, i get lower cost per clicks, but find that my ads are primarily being served to audiences 65+, which is absolutely not our demographic target audience. it's horseshit

Same, we sell girls and women's clothing and when I leave it to FB, they show the add to 65% men.....men NEVER buy from us, and money spent showing men ads would be FAR better spent on showing to women.

It's a good post.....but don't put so much stock in FB. FB's priorities are not the same as yours.....they aren't trying to help you, they are trying to extract more money from you.

Imagine fishing for a moment.....all these billions of profiles and traffic is the hook and bait....YOU are the fish they are trying to catch. Just like how you're trying to catch someone to buy, FB is trying to catch you. The ENTIRE platform is designed to catch you, the ad buyer....it's literally the sole purpose of the platform, it survives by catching advertisers.

The person can't share because it's true, with 15 years of experience myself and working building multiple successful ecom stores, plus other types of services and product for clients, I found the same thing: indeed it's very unique for every business and product. Facebook ad strategies are like fingerprints. Everything comes down to testing what unique strategy works for that specific product x business x ad account x target group. And there is no 1 way like the saying (where I'm from tho): there are multiple roads leading to Rome.

But one of my most crazy working methods I used in ecom is: manual bidding. That stuff is interesting and can be very profitable.

hey! totally agree, but i guess advantage+ work good only if you need to target USA/Europe or native english speakers. I thinks it's all about customer patterns, that algorithm doesn't take into account when it comes to specific groups. For example, i never use advantage when i need to grab some russian-speaking people, because it's always target weird unrelatable guys, but manual usually gives excellent results

No you still have to select the location. I select the location for the country I'm aiming at.

Yes you can, but I’m more focused on dropshipping not sure if what you’re looking for is dropshipping.

Yeah, sorry, I just figured you know a lot about Adv+ and I've been wondering that while getting all my ducks in a row. I'd be advertising for my therapy practice - I'm only allowed to practise in one province, so it would literally be a waste for everyone for ads to be shown to anyone outside of it, because I literally wouldn't be allowed to provide them with services.

I really like the idea of Adv+ as long as it's not going to waste my money and other people's time by showing ads to people outside the scope of my licence.

In your ad account settings you can set location controls for specific areas. I don’t recall exactly how granular it is, but I know it at least works in the US down to a state level, so I imagine it also works at the province level.

You'll want to set up the ad for leads or for calls based on how you do your therapy sessions.

Thanks for your helpful post about facebook ads, and replying to me earlier about which campaign type to be using. Also screw those guys coming in saying "source: 1.1 mil".

I'm struggling a bit here with what I'm doing wrong. I have two campaigns: A "Broad" campaign with $7.50/daily and a "Narrowed" campaign at $15/day.

Broad is all default settings for the most part that I can tell. It's doing alright.

Narrow I've adjusted the Advantage Audience+ to be more niche, and it's doing very well compared to the Broad campaign (CTR is good, even had a couple of sales from with this audience in a previous campaign I tested).

Question is: Do I raise the budget of the Broad campaign to $7.50, or do I leave it as is? Do the results from Narrow campaign influence the Broad campaign any, seeing as they use the same pixel?

<$10.00/day is a little too low. I have a hard time seeing results that way. But if the budget is working for you, than keep it. The system will learn more and more about your audience within that budget.

This has been my thought process for the last month. Time vs. Budget. Although its true that if you give a larger budget, you can accumulate data faster, that can be a double edge sword because if the algo is targeting a less than ideal audience in a specific day, you're just going to pay a larger daily budget for the same result as a lower budget. (No Sale or low Sales)

However, there are so many variables that it's VERY tough to decide on what will work for a specific business. Different products, services, price points, niches, audiences, landing pages, funnels, CTA's Just too many variables.

Everyone has their own methods that work. I do fine without advantage +. I rigorously test audiences then consolidate them all into one adset. Then yes leave it be while the algorithms learn. My roas before learning phase was 2.5 after learning phase 6x ROAS daily budget of $110 audience of 14 million. With this structure I can scale and know with 100% certainity I'm targeting my niche. My cap on conversion cost needs to be under $20 for profitability yesterday I was at $13 i'm only 16 days into this campaign.

Do you use ABO or CBO?

I’d actually challenge some of your points, I’m doing low 5-digits daily spend and testing nearly every part of the creatives and platform settings weekly:

Advantage+ only - doing great with manual using ABO and CBO Bid. What do you mean by we don’t know more than fbs algo? Maybe in some areas, but it’s main job is to maximize their profits + it doesn’t have full insight in your channel mix

You should not increase budgets at all - too bad, I’m bumping tens of ad sets by $100+ every few days, no big impact on performance except for the cases where an ad had churned. Then it’s back to the drawing board for the next $100k spender

The ad sets combining argument is to get out of learning phase. First of all this doesn’t impact the performance ever. Secondly with bigger budgets you’ll be able to get out tens of ad sets out of learning

I did this, basically. I did it on $5/day and that’s prob why it took mine longer to get better results. My issue with Advantage was that (I assume) it was the culprit for a ton of bot traffic. I had my CPC ~ .13! Killing it but then Wix only counted roughly 5% of my clicks as traffic being driven. So a 95% discrepancy caused me to turn it all off. It was not to sell products but was for a mailing list for alpha sign ups for my app. Any ideas why the discrepancy was so huge? There were some problems resolving my pixel - but that was about forms being filled and the clicks were upstream of that so it was all crap.

Lost me at Advantage+ .... Most of my campaigns perform better which preset targeting. For example, I had a client who delivered female products using Advantage+ lots of men saw the ad despite selecting the gender. Not saying it doesn't work but also consider using this benefits Meta the most.

Definitely not maybe 1/4 of it. Try to set it at $100/day. Because $400 is a lot. You’ll need to get more people to see if it works out. But I’m not sure if you’ll see sales, I don’t do high ticket dropshipping. So I wouldn’t be the right person to ask tbh.

No NEVER use catalogs carousel or whatever else. All those bring traffic never really any sales. Just focus on either an image ad or a video ad. I don’t understand by stop winners getting all spend? What do you mean by that?

I have had success with catalogs to be real. But when I put them alongside regular ads they take most of the spend. What I'm asking is what do you do when your old winner is now declining in performance. And how do you test?

Well if you're not getting any sales anymore that pixel is done. The data is useless you have to restart regardless.

So in an ideal world for a beginning would the suggestion be:

  1. $10 a day showing a product broken down into 5 different sub-product a/b tests and once the algorithm has had to to adjust and find your clients
  2. Create a remarking ad at another 10 aday?

1.) you don’t need a/b you just need a clear image show casing product , and using 5adsets for $10/day it makes it $2.00/adset this will strain the algorithm to really see who’s interested if you can get clicks within that strain for whichever product it is, that’s the winner. 2.) No, you do $5.00/adset out of the 5 products you tested if you get clicks and good engagement for 3 products , you do $15.00. Since 3*5 is 15. You’re giving each adset $5.00 but don’t go less than $10/day that’s bad for Facebook since the budget will be too little.

It depends on the product. And 3rd week is an estimate. Key word "should". Again it's humans not bots so you won't know the exact time frame for every single product you're selling. Some products I see sale in 1st day of running ads and no sales the next 3 days. Or some products within 3 days some within 4 days. But it's the week that you have to count not the day.

I don’t do any remarketing campaigns. Or have as of yet. I tested a few and they all failed so I stopped those. And I just do cold traffic now. Facebook ads gets better and better with time.

Once you learn one platform. It's easy to do everything else. It's essentially the same progress for every other platform, even Pinterest Google etc. They all have campaigns, and ad sets do the test and pick the winner. But you have to keep in mind your ads need time. That's the biggest mistake people make is assume they should be seeing sales within the first day or else they're running ads improperly which is a mistake. Sometimes you'll get lucky and day 1 see sales. But again it takes time to learn and adjust itself.

ah okay great and also i noticed that i was doing one of the mistakes of using products that are best sellers my question is what do you the would be the beat threshold of the units sold? like how much should a product have sold for it to be “untapped”

Some products I see 2-3 sales. Some have 0 sales. But in the beginning I was looking for 2-3 sales minimum. Majority of products I’m selling have 2-3 sales. Just follow the post. Do the test see which one has the lowest CPC. And that’ll most likely get the most sales the main thing I’m going to tell you is you need to know your niche like at the end of the day this is a business

Great guide. I’ve been running meta ads for a while. One thing if I can add to this is, using custom audiences. There are a bunch of tools out there like (GoAudience, Proxima). I’m from Brazil, and here, in the niche of supplements or info products, it's quite common to see different scaling strategies. We scale vertically with several CBO campaigns (30 to 50) every day. We turn off the campaigns that don’t sell, and we increase or decrease the budget daily.

I’ve personally achieved 6-figure results in a month using this strategy. However, I’ve also noticed that Facebook has changed a bit in recent months. Perhaps allowing a campaign to perform for a longer period can indeed improve its results over time.

Here in Brazil, our currency is five times less valuable than the dollar, and we sell low-ticket products, like R$29.90, which is around 6 dollars. I have several friends who run campaigns with a minimal budget, and it works perfectly. For example, they run campaigns in dollars, with a budget of around 3.50 dollars, using CBO with "1-1-1" targeting. When the campaign generates more than two sales, they increase the budget and control it daily, adjusting according to the CPA. This has been working.

What I mean by this is that Facebook can sell even with a low budget. It’s not a limiting factor.

A follow up question would be when should I scale the budget up after the end of 3rd week? Let’s say by the end of 3rd week, I made 5 sales with $20 ad spend per day. If I scale up the budget to $40 ad spend per day, would I at least get 10 sales from it? Could it be more?

I get 10 sales some days with $10/budget, what I recommend is whatever you eventually want to set as / day, just use that from day 1. This way the algorithm can catch enough data within that budget and optimize best for that budget. If you want to eventually do $40/day then just start with $40/day even thought it’s a huge amount. I don’t go above $20/day personally. Most I’ve done is $30/day.

Interested in how much you're selling your products for? $1 CPA is insanely low, so keen to get a better idea.

With all due respect, $500/day is nothing.

We spend $180k a month and make ~$21k a day. And I'm small time - I have friends spending 7 figures a month.

You haven't even scratched the surface, most of what you're seeing is just noise.

That’s great for you. But you’ve just once again proven you’re an “ads expert” please go expertise somewhere else. I’m trying to find people like me from 1 year ago. If noise is working for me than I’ll keep the noise. You can go sit at a quiet place. 😁
